Mark is a director of his own consultancy services company, Mark G Stevens Ltd.
His preceding 44-year local government career spans both highways and transportation services, securing funding for and overseeing a wide range of highway, civil and municipal engineering schemes, as well as a focus on regeneration and economic growth.
Until the summer of 2025 when he decided to step down from his role, Mark had been the Chair of ADEPT’s Engineering Board, ADEPT’s representative on the UK Roads Liaison Group and the World Roads Association UK Committee for 8 years. During that time, he authored ADEPT’s policy position papers on ‘e-scooters’ and ‘highways maintenance’, as well as the joint DfT/ADEPT paper, ‘Potholes: a repair guide’.
Mark set up and developed the Midlands Highways Alliance, led Suffolk’s DfT/ADEPT SMART Places ‘Live Labs’ project, helped Vaisala develop its ‘Road AI’ dashcam technology system and was a contributor towards the CIHT report ‘Improving Local Highways’.
In July 2020, Mark was awarded the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation’s ‘Transportation Profession of the Year’. Amongst other issues, this recognised his work on COVID-19 recovery and the successful pursuit for enhanced maintenance funding at a national level for the highways sector.
